-Yellow Jackets-
Yellow jackets are typically ground dwelling, but not always, also living in a structures siding, attics, wood piles, tree cavities, abandoned animal holes or any subterranean cavity. Nests are not usually visible as they generally have a small exterior opening but can be identified by a steady stream of yellow jackets coming and going from the nest entrance. They are extremely aggressive and there are hundreds to thousands of yellow jackets per hive ranging in size from a grapefruit to a large beach ball. Great care should be taken to not disturb the nest as this can cause a defensive reaction and result in many painful stings in a short amount of time. Yellow jackets are the size of a pencil eraser, with yellow and black, hairless bodies. They are most active spring to early fall, and in the mid-to-late afternoon heat.
